Wellingborough School will be sponsoring the ‘Inspirational Teacher of the Year’ category of the 2017 Education Awards.
We pride ourselves on offering a robust education with rigorous academic standards, complemented by an extensive
extra-curricular programme. For this reason, Wellingborough School is keen to celebrate inspirational teaching in our fellow
schools across the county. Wellingborough School is Northamptonshire's only HMC Co-Educational Independent Day School, for pupils aged 3 to 18. We believe girls and boys are best educated in the classroom together, being able to share ideas and perspectives in a setting reflective of the real world. The philosophy of Wellingborough School places scholarly achievement at the heart of a challenging education. Our teachers are key to the delivery of this. The school seeks to develop self-awareness and a sense of responsibility, values both individuality and altruism, and fosters the spirit of community and commitment that has been traditional to the school throughout its long history. Our teachers encourage pupils to broaden their academic experiences, take advantage of opportunities, think for themselves and develop into responsible young adults by taking increasing responsibility for their own lives. In every aspect of School life we aim to respect individuals, encourage an acknowledgement of the views of others and to develop social awareness. For example, Wellingborough School remains Alzheimer’s Research UK’s highest fundraising school, having raised more than £27,500 for the charity in a sponsored trek of the Sahara. The high take-up of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) amongst our pupils is evidence of their intellectual curiosity. EPQs have focussed on subjects as diverse as oratory - where a pupil interviewed Neil Kinnock - to the restoration of a Volkswagen Beetle. Coupled with good A-Level grades, this allows over 90% of our sixth Form leavers to go on to the country’s leading universities. Inspirational teachers are critical in nurturing students along this journey. Our academic focus and strengths are complemented by a range of co-curricular activities which emphasise developing individually whilst valuing the importance of teamwork and social skills. Our challenge is to provide an education where boys and girls are happy and safe so that they are able to grow in self-confidence and achieve academic fulfilment. Friday afternoons offer a choice of activities centred on leadership or service, including Amnesty International, Language Leaders Award, Community Cohesion and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). The CCF is unusual as there are four sections - Navy, Royal Marines, Army and RAF – and the school is one of only 18 to have the Royal Marines. The Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) programme covers Bronze through to Gold Award and offers cycling, canoeing or walking expeditions. We are proud of the balance between academic prowess and developing character through cocurricular activities - and of the integral role our teachers play in this - and look forward to honouring inspirational teachers in other schools.
